Keratin treatments are two of the most popular hair treatments, along with conditioner and shampoo. Keratin treatments can be used to build strength and volume. Oil masks are used to protect and restore hair moisture. Is it possible to combine them? Or should you choose one over the other?
What is a Keratin Treatment?
There are two types of Keratin treatments: the salon-style treatment or the at-home shampoo. Although they are vastly different, we will cover them both.
A salon-style keratin is a technique for straightening your hair. It’s also known as a Brazilian Keratin Treatment. Although it is not a keratin treatment but keratin is added at the end to protect the treatment.
Brazilian treatments involve treating your hair with a formaldehyde derivative chemical or glyoxylic acids to remove it of everything. This removes oils, moisture, and the protective outer layer. Your hair becomes very dry and brittle. To straighten hair, heat-based treatments such as flat ironing or blow-drying can be used. It’s like breaking a bone, but it doesn’t heal correctly. You have to do it again, only this time, it is a thousand times.
Another reason this analogy fails is that hair doesn’t heal. Although hair isn’t dead, it isn’t quite “dead”. Hair can’t heal itself naturally. The hair is replaced by new growth when it becomes damaged, falls off or breaks down.
The Brazilian treatment must be able to restore the volume of the hair it has destroyed. This is where keratin comes into play. To seal the hair and protect it from further damage, a keratin-infused shampoo is applied.
This works in most cases, but it all depends on the individual and the salon. This is a permanent hair straightening treatment that will last for a while, but your natural hair will grow back as the hair grows out.
A home keratin treatment can be a little different. This treatment doesn’t cause heat damage to your hair or have the same straightening effects as the salon treatment. The keratin is simply applied to your hair’s exterior. A keratin treatment is a good option for naturally thin hair.
This is done by layering keratin onto your hair that is already composed of keratin. Keratin shampoo fills in microscopic holes and pits in your hair. It doesn’t “heal”, as hair cannot heal. Instead, it repairs cracks in roads with a new layer of asphalt. Although the road surface is still damaged and difficult to navigate, it’s now smoother and more enjoyable.
Both cases result in hair that is more smooth and slipper due to a new coating of keratin. You should be cautious when applying keratin treatments to your hair. Too much can cause it to become clumpy and sticky.
What Coconut Oil does?
What about coconut oil? Coconut oil is used as a base in many hair treatments, including homemade shampoos and hair masks. What is it good for?
Coconut oil can be used as a moisturizer. Coconut oil contains a natural acid called Lauric acid, which penetrates the hair’s outer sheath and provides moisture to the inside. This results in hair that is softer, voluminous, and more shiny.
Coconut oil can also be used to treat the scalp. Coconut oil can be applied to the scalp to soothe dry and itchy skin. It can also stimulate hair growth by delivering vitamins and amino acids.
Coconut oil treatments can add protection to your hair in many situations. This can help protect it from damage caused by UV rays.
Coconut oil can also be used for other purposes. Coconut oil can be used as a pre-shampoo treatment for hair to lock in natural moisture. Normal shampoos won’t strip it away. Coconut oil is useful for controlling frizz and can be used as a carrier for oils, herbs, and other treatments to make them stick better to your hair.
Can these two treatments be combined?
Coconut oil and keratin leave a little of their own hair behind. Are they both going to leave your hair too heavy, dry, and sticky? Maybe. There are many nuances that need to be discussed in any situation.
Coconut oil is the best choice for everyday use. Coconut oil is best for daily use. It keeps hair moisturized and makes it easy to apply. Keratin, on the other hand, is a more occasional treatment that’s used about once per week. This is for a keratin shampoo. You are not going to get a salon straightening treatment every single week.
You will be instructed not to wash your hair after a salon keratin treatment. This is because of the keratin treatment. Stylists want your hair to have time to absorb and harden the keratin. If you wash your hair immediately, it could cause damage. This is true for normal shampoos, but also coconut oil treatments. Your stylist may tell you to let your hair go, but it is best to do so!
You don’t need to have the same restrictions for keratin-infused shampoos. A keratin shampoo can be used as many times as the label says, no matter how often it is.
Too much keratin can cause hair problems. If you notice that your keratin shampoo makes your hair sticky, clumpy and matted, you should reduce the frequency you use it. There’s a good chance that your hair has too much keratin.
Coconut oil can be used on keratin-treated hair as long as it isn’t in the post-treatment window. This means you shouldn’t use any other treatment for your hair. Coconut oil can be used in combination with regular keratin shampoo if desired.
Coconut oil and keratin shampoo may not work together well.
There are many ways you can combine coconut oil and keratin.
There are many situations in which you could use both coconut oil and keratin. Here are our suggestions.
The salon treatment. You should not use keratin in your hair after a salon treatment. Follow their instructions! You won’t find any keratin shampoos, coconut oil, conditioners, or anything else they don’t tell you to use.
After the two-week period is over, you can use any additional products you wish. To maintain the protective keratin in your hair, we recommend using a keratin-infused shampoo once per week.
Coconut oil is a strong treatment that can reduce the salon’s benefits. You should leave the coconut oil off for at most a few weeks, and then only use it once per week.
You can also use a salon treatment if you don’t have keratin-infused shampoo or coconut oil.
We recommend coconut oil in this instance. Coconut oil penetrates hair, adding moisture and shine. However, it is best to wash your hair with shampoo after using it. This will make your hair light and full of life. You’ll have oily hair if you leave it in.
We recommend that you use coconut oil in the evening, and then let it sit overnight. This will infuse your hair with moisture and any vitamins or infusions that you may add to the oil. Make sure you have a pillowcase to protect your pillow so that there is no grease on it!
Use a keratin-infused shampoo the next morning. The coconut oil will be rinsed out, but the hair will still retain the vitamins and moisture. The shampoo’s keratin will seal in the moisture and protect the hair from further damage.
This process should be repeated approximately once per week, depending on your hair type.
Take care of your personal hair concerns
You may need to adjust or remove certain parts depending on your hair type.
Coconut oil and keratin shampoo can be used more frequently if you have naturally frizzy, dry hair. You will need to treat your hair more often to stop it from returning to its baseline.
You might want to use keratin less often if you have naturally thick hair. Coconut oil can still provide moisture. However, keratin can cause hair to become more sticky and difficult to manage. It can be difficult to control, which is not a good thing when it is already chaotic.
Coconut oil should not be used if your hair is naturally oily. You can moisturize your hair with natural oils, but they need to be managed with shampoo. You can also use a stronger shampoo to remove those oils. After that, moisturize your hair with coconut oil treatment and seal it with a conditioner containing keratin.
Coconut oil should be used more often if you spend a lot of time in the sun. The sun can damage hair deep within the hair. Coconut oil is a great way to protect your hair. A keratin treatment can be used to lock in the protection and repair any sun damage.
You might notice how drying and damaging chemicals can cause hair damage if you swim in a lot of water. To protect your hair from damage and restore it after swimming, you might consider using keratin treatments regularly. It doesn’t have to be used twice a day. However, if you swim frequently, it can be beneficial to do so twice a week.
There is nothing wrong with using coconut oil and keratin in your hair. Your hair will tell you what to do. Reduce the amount of coconut oil in your hair to make it less greasy. Rinse it with shampoo more often if you feel that it is too oily. Reduce the amount of keratin if your hair feels sticky and thick. It’s likely that you’re creating too much outer sheath, and your hair is just rubbing against its own skin too often. Apply keratin to your hair more often if it is becoming too thin. You can adjust as needed until you achieve the perfect hair.
